FICTIONAL CASE STUDY:
Context: The target audience is all employees that work on a marketing or an advertising team at MagneMind. One hundred twenty-eight employees will be included in this training. Roughly 20% of employees may attend a virtual training session offered separately from the in-person Instructor-Led Training, therefore this training has been developed for both ILT & VILT.
Challenges: Client approval ratings from the most recent year dipped to 83%. After receiving the ratings, the company asked for additional feedback from clients and discovered a few troubling trends. To investigate further, a survey was given to all employees at MagneMinds. Overall, survey results show a break-down in team productivity due to functioning issues and use of data to drive decision making.
A performance gap exists due to a decline in teamwork which impacts the team’s ability to analyze data, collaborate, organize and function effectively in order to be productive. In addition, MagneMind teams composed Working Agreements three years previously, but the Working Agreements have not been updated to reflect current performance needs.
Solutions: To target the overall business problem, a comprehensive training program, Data-Driven Decision-Making, will be conducted. The training program consists of four separate Instructor-Led Trainings (or Virtual Instructor-Led Training) courses. This is Course 1: Standards for Effective Teams which empowers learners to establish standards around which teams develop and sustain productive group meetings, ensures that all team members are engaged as respected contributors, and enhances the quality and innovative conversation teams produce.
Learning outcomes of Course 1: Standards for Effective Teams are:
Learners will demonstrate and apply the Standards for Effective Teams in team meetings.
Learners will self-assess their perceived personal behavior with respect to the Standards for Effective Teams as an engaged and contributing team member.
Learners will assess their group member (team) perceived behavior with respect to the Standards for Effective Teams as an engaged and contributing team member.
Learners will contribute to the composition of a revised Working Agreement for the team to enhance constructive teamwork and support it through action.
Course Review: Surveys, assessments and observations will be conducted following Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Training Evaluation.
Level 1 (Reaction): A short course survey is offered for learners to rate the effectiveness of the course, reflect on their take-aways, and give feedback.
Level 2 (Learning):
The 10 question final quiz assessment, Standards for Effective Teams, will measure if the learner has acquired the knowledge and skills of focus on the course.
The Standards for Effective Teams (Self-Assessments) and Working Agreement Revisions will focus on self-assessment by the learner and application of knowledge and skills focused on in course to revise Team Working Agreements.
Level 3 (Behavior):
Teams will continue to practice the Standards for Effective Teams through application during team meetings. Facilitators will be directed to review the Standards for Effective Teams and Working Agreements prior to each team meeting and pick one of the five standards to focus on during each meeting.
Both the PERSONAL and TEAM Standards for Effective Teams Assessments will be completed quarterly. Data will be collected and results will be evaluated for growth.
Managers will also record observations of the dynamics of the team, use of the Standards for Effective Teams and overall innovation and production.
Level 4 (Results): After one year from completion of the Standards for Effective Teams course:
Another survey will be given regarding team collaboration and functioning.
Standards for Effective Teams Assessments will be reviewed to analyze growth for individuals and teams and to see if the 90% participation was obtained.
Survey data and Standards for Effective Teams data, together, will be analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of this course promoting team collaboration, functioning, innovation and productivity.
One year following the completion of all four phases of the entire Data-Driven Decision Making training, results from this training course, along with the other courses will be reviewed to assess the effectiveness of the entire Data-Driven Decision Making training in increasing client approval ratings by 10%, per the Overall Performance Objective/Business Goal.
